TOUR THE SEAQUELL

Ibiza, Spain -November 9, 1997

Ibiza Spain

Position: Ibiza, Spain -November 9, 1997

Departing Athens the weather was reasonable for sailing. We stopped in Sardinia to pick up Todd and Sky and continued west to Gibralter. On the 5th, the weather started to come up with winds from the west reaching 50 knots with 30' seas and thus we made very little forward progress to the west. The captain made a decision which was in all of our best interests and headed north to seek shelter of the Belearic Islands. After 15 hrs of continued rough seas we reached Formentera, and the next day we went on to Ibiza, Spain for the comfort of a harbor. At the this time Gibralter is full of boats waiting out the weather as the Atlantic is nothing but gale winds and no one can get out. A Navy supply boat was grounded in southern Spain. This is all part of the big storm that has created so many problems in northern Spain and Portugal. SeaQuell and crew will wait in Ibiza for better weather and hope to clear Gibralter by the end of the week They will then head south for better seas. We now know how rough the weather can get in the Med.
