Port of Horta, Azores, Portugal -May 21, 1997
Position: Port of Horta, Azores, Portugal -May 21, 1997 The first leg our trip has been completed with docking in Horta. This has been most exciting for me having made an ocean crossing. Thanks to crew for knowing where they were going it was a great trip. Our time of arrival was fortunate as a gale was blowing and rainy the next day. The crew took advantage of being on shore for a party at the Cafe Sport, the home of all the cruising crews. The harbor has been a favor stop of many cruising boats. Each of the crews paint the name of their boat on the harbor walls, the sidewalks, benches, and wherever they can find space to paint. Many painting are artistic and have dates of their years of consecutive stops. Carol of our crew had her favorite bench on which to change the name of the boat from Arene A to Seaquell. A tour of island was highlighted by the south end volcano which had a major eruption several years ago. About 1/3 of the island was covered by volcano dust and unusable. This is still an unstable volcano that concerns many that live there and the government. This one of the locations of concerns for tsunamis, if a major eruption or collapse of this volanco were to happen. The island is about the size of St. Croix with plenty of rain for raising food for the island. |
