TOUR THE SEAQUELL

Kiel Canal, Germany- Wednesday - June 25, 1997

Kiel Canal Germany

Position - 53' 54" N 9' 09" E -- At south end of Kiel Canal, Germany

Copenhagen - it was enjoyable to be part of the start of the second half of summer holiday celebrations. There were bonfires to scare the witches away from the last half of the summer. We started the last half of summer holiday in Gothenberg. a second night in Copenhagen and again enjoyed the third night coming into Kiel. The sky was full of beautiful fireworks that continued for half an hour.

The little mermaid in Copenhagen was as charming as the tour books and chamber of commerce say. Hans Christian Anderson has made renown history for Denmark and is well respected with monuments, streets, buildings and many souvenirs and fairy tale books available. The longest walking-shopping street in Scandinavia was very busy and full of people enjoying themselves. It was a beautiful port of call.

Leaving Copenhagen for Kiel we cruised through an unscheduled gale with 35 to 45 mph winds right on our heading. The boat was covered by sea spray for 10-12 hours. We were all glad to get to Kiel and anchor for the night.

The trip through the Kiel Canal, 90 km, was a great relief after the gale ride. This is a very busy commercial canal. We met more than 50 commercial ships of all sizes including military, and even a submarine.

On June 26 we leave for London hoping for good weather crossing the North Sea, English Channel into the Thames River. Our docking will be St. Catherine's Marina in downtown London.
